Darvill's Rare Prints has a rich and interesting history that spans over one hundred years. Our founder, Fred T. Darvill, Sr., was an Englishman who emigrated to the United States in the late 1800s. He started his life in America helping his uncle sell law books. Mr. Darvill was also a lawyer and published many legal books and treatises. As he sought to interest attorneys in law books, he took along antique engravings and etchings related to the legal profession. He quickly learned that the lawyers were more keen on the prints than the books being offered for sale. With ten brothers and sisters in England to keep him in a constant supply of antique prints and maps, Darvill's Rare Prints was founded in 1918 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In the early 1920s, Mr. Darvill relocated the business to San Francisco, California, where it flourished despite the turbulent times of the Great Depression. Mr. Darvill was a great fan of the Pacific Northwest and moved the entire stock and business to Orcas Island, Washington in 1942. He also operated the shop in Bellingham, Washington when the Eastsound gallery would close during the island's off-season. Mr. Darvill continued to operate the business into his nineties until selling to Dale and Catherine Pederson in 1982. The Pedersons operated the business for over thirty years from Orcas Island until selling the business in 2003 to Wade Campbell and Chris Brussat.
This dynamic duo continued the venerable tradition of antique prints and maps on Orcas Island (and also supported local artists with gallery shows and representation) until making the decision to close the brick-and-mortar gallery and to begin offering Darvill's impressive collection of fine antique prints and maps to a worldwide audience via the Internet.
Our home base is now in the American Southwest (Prescott, Arizona) and while we no longer operate a physical gallery, we very much enjoy providing many thousands of the best original antique prints and maps to our followers all over the world. Our website is continually expanding and we encourage you to stop by often to explore all of the treasures to be found here.
Thanks very much for allowing Darvill's Rare Prints to flourish and embark on our second century as purveyors of genuine antique and vintage prints and maps to the entire world.
